James Cameron ceremony

Remove Before Flight

A deep-sea submersible may not have keys, but it does have one very important piece of equipment that needs to be accounted for before every dive: a pin that holds the sub’s ascent weights. Explorer and director James Cameron handed over the "keys" to the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER to WHOI President and Director Susan K. Avery on June 14, 2013, on its final stop from Los Angeles to Woods Hole. WHOI engineers are studying the sub’s unique deep-diving technology, which Cameron used to descend to the deepest part of the ocean, the Challenger Deep, in 2012.
