Researchers and ship crewmembers from the icebreaker Oden shovel and
pick their way through ice and snow to open a hole to the Arctic Ocean.
WHOI engineers tested new underwater vehicles and sampling equipment in
the Arctic Circle in June, and they are now in the midst of a 40-day expedition to hunt for seafloor hydrothermal vents and life on the Gakkel Ridge.
