SPURS Cruise

High Wire Act

Steve Faluotico of WHOI's Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department cleans a sensor on the meteorological mast on R/V Knorr during the September 2012 SPURS cruise to study how salt content fluctuates in the ocean's upper layers and how these variations are related to shifts in rainfall patterns around the planet. The top of the lattice tower, with a variety of weather sensors and lights, is more than 50 feet above the waterline at the bow of the ship. Although it may appear that Steve is performing a high wire act, he's securely tethered to the tower. (Photo by Adam Seamans, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
