Marine Microbes

WHOI biogeochemist Mak Saito prepares to drill through six feet of ice to take a water sample during 2009 fieldwork in Antarctica that he later analyzed for dissolved metals. Saito recently received the Marine Microbiology Initiative Investigator Award from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to pursue pioneering research in the field of marine microbial ecology. Saito's research focuses on the role of metals in marine ecosystems, with an emphasis on their role in proteins found in microbes. Metals are essential components in biogeochemical reactions, and their scarcity in seawater has a profound effect on  natural processes, such as the carbon and nitrogen cycles, and has resulted in many unique adaptations.
