WHOI mechanical shop member Geoffrey Ekblaw welds part of the frame of the Nereus
hybrid remotely operated vehicle. The HROV is a single vehicle
that will perform two very different kinds of missions: it will swim
freely as an autonomous vehicle for survey work, and it will be tethered to a ship for direct control when researchers want to collect seafloor samples.
