First Light

Researcher Emily Peacock took this image of an icy sunrise partway through a 65-day Antarctic research cruise aboard the icebreaker Nathaniel B. Palmer, part of a program studying Climate Variability and Predictability. Peacock was aboard to analyze water samples with an instrument that counts and takes images of phytoplankton cells, for studies by WHOI biologist Sam Laney. Also on the cruise were WHOI engineer Jim Ryder, who recovered moorings placed the previous year, and high school teacher Juan Botella, participant in the PolarTREC program.
