Oil and water in the Gulf

Portrait of a Spill

This photo of oil and water in the Gulf of Mexico, taken in June 2010, recalls the historic spill that spread millions of gallons of oil in the three months following the tragic explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform that occurred one year ago today. The picture was taken from the R/V Cape Hatteras as WHOI scientists and engineers responded to the spill to study its effects on the environment.
