Midnight camp

Sunny yellow tents on stark lava and snow mark a temporary home for a WHOI research team in Antarctica to study the weathering of ancient lava flows from a long-dormant volcano, Mt. Morning. The trip, a Polar Discovery online expedition, took place in December 2007—Antarctic summer—which provided the group 24-hour daylight for working. WHOI geologist Mark Kurz led the small band, including geologist Adam Soule, Joint Program Student Andrea Burke, photographer Chris Linder, and writer Hugh Powell.
