Jerry Dean (foreground) and colleague carry a Vector Averaging Current Meter that had just been recovered from the Sargasso Sea, where it was attached to a mooring line as part of the PolyMODE array II. PolyMODE was a joint venture between the United States and the USSR that ran from 1973 to 1981. Its purpose was to gather data about eddies in the North Atlantic.
