OSJ Fellows with Mary Carman

Squirts to Reckon With

WHOI biologist Mary Carman regales Ocean Science Journalism Fellows Clarke Canfield (center) from the Associated Press and Frank Pope from The Times of London with tales of the damage being done to New England coastal waters by invasive sea squirts. Each year, a group of journalists come to Woods Hole for a week to learn about the physics, chemistry, and biology of the ocean. Invasive sea squirts establish themselves in tidal areas, crowd out native species in their path and, Carman recently discovered, pose a threat to protected species of eelgrass.
