Twister in a Bottle

Geophysicist Stewart Turner works on a laboratory model of a tornado vortex, circa 1962. Turner, who later returned to Australian National University, did research at WHOI while on a Rossby Fellowship. In addition to his tornado vortex model—which he later called "one of the few rotating experiments I have ever done in my career"—Turner worked on cloud physics and models of evaporation and condensation. While at WHOI,he also collaborated with Henry Stommel, Melvin Stern, Duncan Blanchard, Eric Kraus and George Veronis. (Photo by Jan Hahn, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
