Just like you and me, marine phytoplankton like these Melosira sp. need essential nutrients, such as iron and Vitamin B12, but those nutrients are often not so easy to get in the ocean. Microscopic phytoplankton are essential for life on Earth, so it's valuable to learn how they live and how they are responding to changing conditions.
