Hurricanes and cloud clusters represent important modes of organization of moist convection. In this lecture, Dr. Emanuel will present results of ongoing research that suggest that these phenomena are integral components of the earth’s climate system that help to regulate tropical climate, both by drying the atmosphere and by cooling the upper ocean. The physics by which they do so are either absent from or poorly represented in today’s global climate models, casting some doubt on their ability to simulate climate change, at least in the tropics.
