Nereus at Work

After engineers launch the vehicle from the ship, it works in its free-swimming mode to map the seafloor before returning to the surface. Engineers then can transform it into its tethered mode for seafloor sampling.  (Animation by Jack Cook, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
