Lisa W. Drew is glad to write about high-temperature environments after focusing for many years on extremes at the other end of the thermometer, including the sea ice ecosystems of the Far North. Her articles have appeared in National Wildlife, New Scientist, The New York Times, Newsweek, and elsewhere. She also has worked as a teacher, magazine editor, editorial consultant and writer for Web sites, researcher on documentary films, script person, movie theater manager, tavern cook, and more. Hiking, skiing, gardening with native plants, and sleeping are among her favorite activities.

After spending the first six years of the 21st century in Alaska, she moved three years ago to Ithaca, N.Y., which gets more than five and a half feet of snow per winter. If someone wants to send her to the South Pacific to do extended research on seabed mining—or on anything else—she’s all ears.
