Images: A Most Ingenious Paradoxical Plankton

The marine bacteria Trichodesmium come in a rainbow of colors. Cells from three different cultures of the marine bacteria Trichodesmium have been concentrated on a filter and then popped in a buffer so the cells' pigments can be analyzed. Researchers aboard the R/V Kilo Moana collect seawater samples from Niskin bottles on a CTD (conductivity/temperture/depth) device. These bottles can be programmed to snap shut at specific depths. When the CTD comes back on board, MIT/WHOI graduate student Annette Hynes (At about 7 o'clcok in the photo) collected Trichodesmium from samples onto a filter and froze it in liquid nitrogen to analyze the DNA later.
