Education B.E.: Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, Aug 1998. M.S.: Electrical Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Aug. 2001. Ph.D.: Electrical Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dec. 2006.
Research Interests Broad interests: signal and image processing, sparse sensing and optimization. Specific areas of research interest: shallow water acoustic communications, underwater acoustics, adaptive beamforming and array processing techniques, underwater imaging, music analysis and characterization.
Research Statement My primary area of expertise is signal processing and sparse optimization and since arriving at WHOI, I have applied my skills to various areas in oceanography with special focus on shallow water acoustic communications. Specifically, I have developed a novel adaptive technique for robust shallow water channel estimation and tracking in the presence of Doppler spread, and am currently testing my algorithms on experimental field data. Please refer to my CV for a list of my recent publications. Broadly speaking, I seek to apply geometric intuition to solve challenging problems in signal processing and optimization, particularly those commonly encountered in time-varying and non-linear systems, such as underwater acoustic or optical communications. Most of my research has been in channel estimation and interference mitigation, with an interest in sparse sensing, for example, for tracking the time-varying and sparsely distributed delay-Doppler coefficients in the shallow water acoustic channel. In my doctoral work, I addressed the issue of separating non-additive interference as is commonly encountered in a non-linear satellite downlink. I am currently exploring related application areas for my signal processing techniques such as underwater imaging and hope to build array processing and compressive sampling methods to solve related oceanographic problems. I am also actively working on petroleum forensics related to determination of reservoir connectivity and oil spills. Outside the realm of oceanographic research, my work also applies to wireless communications, medical imaging and signal processing related to music analysis and characterization.
Please refer to my CV (last updated Sept 2011) for my recent publications and details on my active interests.
Personal Statement I am a passionate researcher who feels privileged to apply the research I have grown to love over the years to an area as broad and deep (pun intended) as the ocean. I work closely with my professor and colleagues and also actively seek interdisciplinary pursuits to extend the scope and impact of my work. Educational outreach is important to me. Please feel free to email me if you see a fit between a problem that interests you and what I do.
Skills Technical skills: Geometric visualization of engineering and scientific problems, coding in matlab and C++, applied mathematics and statistics, data analysis, research skills in my area of interest. Non-technical skills: Program management, professional writing (articles and proposals), organizing conference sessions, educational outreach.
