Lying Down on the Job

Lying Down on the Job

July 29, 2016

Sometimes lying down on the job is a good thing. One of the features of the new research vessel Neil Armstrong is the fact that its A-frame, the large gray hoist on the stern of the ship, can fold almost all the way onto the back deck. This allows crew members to change rigging and make repairs while the ship is underway without having to climb the frame. Here, the A-frame is folded down for maintenance while the ship was tied up to the WHOI dock recently. (Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
