Researchers prepare to bury seismic sensors in the snow at Antarctica‘s Ross Ice Shelf. Led by Peter Bromirski (Univ. California, San Diego), Ralph Stephen (WHOI), Doug Wiens (WUSL), Rick Aster (CSU), Andrew Nyblade (Penn State), and Peter Gerstoft (UCSD), the team deployed 34 seismometers to form a network capable of measuring the strength and speed of vibrations created by ocean and wind waves traveling through the ice shelf. The data will enable the team to identify zones and regions of weakness to assist in determining the potential risk of ice shelf collapse.(Photo by Ralph Stephen, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
