Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) is a new technique for measuring temperature using fiber optic cable. Researchers from the labs of WHOI scientist Anne Cohen and UC Irvine’s Kristen Davis recently deployed 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of fiber optic cable at Dongsha Atoll in the South China Sea. The system measures temperature to within 0.01°C every 30 seconds at one-meter intervals. Dongsha Atoll is unique because the largest internal waves in the world sweep through the water there, bringing cool water up the forereef slope towards the reef.(Photo by Thomas DeCarlo, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
