Fishing for Data

WHOI physical oceanographer Glen Gawarkiewicz discusses climate change at a dinner for WHOI Associates. Gawarkiewicz told Associates about his partnership with local fishermen, who are helping him track changes in water temperature and salinity off the New England coast. “To understand the changes in ocean conditions and how those changes impact ecosystems and the people who depend on them, we need to collect more data, more often,” Gawarkiewicz said. “The fishermen’s insights are really important.” The slide in the background shows data from a different study of temperature change by Summer Student Fellow Jacob Forsyth, now an MIT-WHOI Joint Program student.
