Disembarked from the Canadian icebreaker Louis S. St. Laurent, scientist Andrey Proshutinsky (left) and technician William Ostrom drill through a two-meter-thick ice floe in the Arctic Ocean in August 2003. They deployed a buoy that drifts with the floe, measuring currents beneath the ice that may affect global ocean circulation and climate. (Photo by Rick Krishfeld)
