Science Objectives

PI: Jennifer Miksis-Olds

The goal of this expedition is to recover and deploy a bottom lander at the ADEON JAX site.  This lander was not recovered on AR40 although the acoustic release was communicating and indicated release.

PI: Harvey Seim

Recover 2 bottom pods along 250 m isobath and PIES in approx 2800 m using a large ROV

Science Activities

PI: Jennifer Miksis-Olds

  1. Recover JAX lander with ROV upon arrival on site.
  2. Turnaround, and redeploy bottom lander at JAX site.
  3. Conduct CTD casts to collect sound speed profile and water column parameters.

PI: Harvey Seim

limited - run ADCPs in support of ROV operations, possibly XBTs

Shipboard Equipment Notes: We will focus on recovery of the bottom pods and PIES using an Oceaneering Comanche ROV.  Monitoring current speeds with the ADCPs will be critical.  We will also need sound speed, determined with either/both XBTs and CTDs. Near bottom navigation will be supported by USBL system.

Shipboard Communication

Is there a need to receive data from shore on a regular basis?

Shipboard Communication Notes: We will be accessing simple imagery (SST and surface current maps) to assess Gulf Stream position during operations.  Files will not be large (< 1MB).

Navigation Notes: The ROV needs to integrate surface navigation and USBL information for near-bottom navigation.  There has been separate communications about specific models of equipment available.

Winches

Winch Notes:

PI: Harvey Seim

Winch Notes: I'm uncertain about winches at this time.  Oceaneering has said they will not be able to use the ship's fiber optic as an umbilical so presumably they are bringing their own.  I don't know if they will bring their own winch.
