Departure: Jun 25, 2013

Astoria OR

Arrival: Jul 9, 2013

Astoria OR

Operations Area

Continental margin of Oregon and California
Lat/Lon: 45° 0.0′ N / 125° 0.0′ W
Depth Range: 30 / 3000
Will the vessel be operating within 200 NM of a foreign country? no

Science Objectives

Recover ocean bottom seismometers for the Cascadia Initiative (CI).  The CI has multiple science objectives related to structure and dynamics of the Juan de Fuca plate and Cascadia subduction zone.

Science Activities

Recover 30 ocean bottom seismometers. 20 of the instruments are of a trawl-resistant design that may require use of Jason for recovery.  The others are released from their anchor and float to the sea surface for recovery.  If there were problems recovering some of the OBSs during the 2 previous CIET recovery cruise, we will try to recover those also using Jason if necessary.

Additional Info

Pre-cruise Planning Meeting: Teleconference
Media personnel on board: Video
1-2 representatives from Bob Ballard's Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) may participate in this cruise, depending on whether funds can be obtained by them to set up adequate communications capability.
