We are signing off with the last web
page. The N.B.Palmer has engine
trouble. We will begin our transit
back to port tomorrow. We are
wrapping up our research and will
continue to collect samples on the
return transit. CTD casts and
plankton net tows are being done
daily. There are some diverse and
interesting protist communities in the pack ice and ice edge environments. From the net tows we pick out individual protists (as shown in the photos). Julie is picking tintinnid ciliates to use in cold water grazing experiments. Dawn is picking individual protists to amplify their 18S ribosomal DNA along with photodocumentation. This allows us to correlate molecular data with cell morphology. Becky S. is running a
Flowcam that can take images of
protists from a water sample. Astrid is doing a copepod grazing experiment along with the processing of molecular data. Mark is overseeing the CTD sampling and sample collection. Matt is extracting DNA from CTD samples, running agarose gels and cloning amplified DNA. Bob is experimenting with ultraviolet radiation effects on protists. Becky G. oversees this whole project while participating in all of the aspects. This cruise has been a fantastic experience and we are sorry that it has to end so soon. We have lots of samples to work with and Hey - we will be back for Thanksgiving.

We will be updating the calenders frequently with event highlights and research progress.
