Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) Sensors

A crane lowers a CTD over the starboard side. As the ship steams slowly ahead, scientists in a lab on the ship will guide the CTD up and down in the water column, occasionally sending the instrument an electronic signal to collect a water sample in a bottle mounted on the instrument's cage.
