MVCOMicroscope and Telescope
The Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO) allows scientists to measure small details of ocean process with minute-by-minute resolution, while also affording the opportunity to paint broader pictures of what is happening in the northwestern Atlantic over the longer term. MVCO includes a shore-based lab and meteorological mast, an underwater node, and a tower wired for instrumentation above and below the water line.

How Does an Observatory WorkHow Does an Observatory Work?
When magma rises through Earth's crust to a mid-ocean ridge, ocean observatory sensors detect the ground motion, the spilling lava, and the chemicals spewing from hydrothermal vents. Observations are relayed via satellite back to shore-based researchers, who can command their instruments and a robotic vehicle to make specialized measurements, and then muster an expedition to inspect the eruption firsthand with submersibles or other undersea vehicles.

Dedication Ceremony Held for New Laboratory
WHOI President and Director Susan Avery and Director of Research Larry Madin were joined by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Deputy Director Willie May at a dedication ceremony Sept. 20 for the new Laboratory for Ocean Sensors and Observing Systems.  WHOI received an $8.1 million grant from NIST to fund construction of the new scientific research facility.
