Surveying Carbon

Surveying Carbon

June 9, 2012

Mike Dempsey (left) of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Sciences and MIT/WHOI Joint Program student David Griffith recover a pump used to collect samples during a 2008 expedition in the Arctic Ocean. The team sampled suspended particles of organic matter, as well as organic carbon and carbon dioxide dissolved in the water. Griffith is the lead author on a new study that offers an important reference for determining how levels of carbon in the Arctic Ocean change over time, and how the ecosystem responds to rising global temperatures. Due to its remote location and the challenges of operating in sea ice, prior tho this study few comprehensive carbon surveys had been conducted there.
