The
Skin Depth Experimental Profiler (SkinDeEP)
Sensors
For
the SAGE cruise, three new sensors will be added to SkinDeEP to measure
oxygen, fluorescence, and irradiance. The Presens implantable oxygen
sensor and MicroxT3 instrument (below) will take measurements of oxygen
in the water. The tiny probe tip size is designed to be from less
than 50 µm to 140 µm while the diameter of the outer jacket
ranges from 140 µm to 900 µm. These miniaturized fiber-optic
oxygen sensors can also be deployed in soil, implanted into the blood
circuit of living animals, or the liquid circuit of trees to measure
oxygen online and in real-time. The OCR-504 irradiance sensor (right)
is a fully digital optical sensor package combining precision optics
with microelectronics. Irradiance measurements taken from this sensor
will help to provide an indicator of biological activity through the
absorption of light.

Fluorescence
is an indicator of the active phytoplankton biomass and the
chlorophyll concentration in water. This high-resolution sensor
(left) is designed to minimize flow distortions around the sampling
head, making it possible to resolve variations of fluorescence
and turbidity over length scales of 25 mm to give valuable insight
into the small-scale structure of plankton and biomass distributions. |
