Deep Basin Experiment
(DBE)

The Deep Basin Experiment (DBE) is a component
of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which is focussed on increasing
our knowledge and understanding of deep circulation processes. It has 4
primary objectives:
-
to observe and quantify the deep circulation within
an abyssal basin,
-
to distinguish between boundary and interior mixing
processes,
-
to understand how passages affect the water flowing
through them and
-
to study the means by which deep water crosses the
equator.
In order to address these issues, a field
program was designed and centered on the Brazil Basin, a relatively
well shaped abyssal basin where eddy energy levels were expected to be
low enough that the very low frequency circulation could be observed with
reasonable resources deployed over a reasonable time period.
