Deep Basin Experiment
(DBE)
preliminary version

The Deep Basin Experiment (DBE) is a component of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which is focussed on increasing our knowledge and understanding of deep circulation processes. It has 4 primary objectives:

  1. to observe and quantify the deep circulation within an abyssal basin,
  2. to distinguish between boundary and interior mixing processes,
  3. to understand how passages affect the water flowing through them and
  4. to study the means by which deep water crosses the equator.
In order to address these issues, a field program was designed and centered on the Brazil Basin, a relatively well shaped abyssal basin where eddy energy levels were expected to be low enough that the very low frequency circulation could be observed with reasonable resources deployed over a reasonable time period.
