The Journey
            Continues

These are my favorite wildlife, scenic, and science images from our
five week journey back to the "Edge of the Arctic Shelf." In terms
of the wildlife and scenic photo opportunities, this year's cruise
            was incredibly different from last
            year.
Since we were repeating many of the previous year's stations
and all of the same mooring positions, I had some idea of the Arctic's
surreal beauty. I expected less ice, of course, since last year's
cruise was in July/August, and this year's was in September/October
(typically the most ice-free months in the Arctic).
Only for the first week, when we ventured to our farthest north position,
did we see any ice. For the rest of the time, it was open water and
(mainly) gray, overcast skies. For much of the cruise
it felt like we were on the New England shelf instead of the Arctic
            Ocean.

The Arctic had some surprises for us, though - at the most unexpected
times, we had some unusual visitors. Select among the thumbnail images
at right for enlarged versions and my comments on these "best of the
best" images. I have also included some technical information for
            curious shutterbugs.

I also invite you to visit my personal
website, where you can see more images from my travels. Enjoy!

Dedication: A few days after arriving back at WHOI, Bob
Pickart was promoted to Senior Scientist. I would like to dedicate
this image gallery to Bob, a truly "modern oceanographer."
Without his vision, this project would not have been possible. Thanks
            Bob!
