Wildlife - Swimming polar bear

This was the closest I have physically come to a polar bear - even closer than the zoo! This bear swam up to the ship while we were 20 miles offshore of Alaska in the Chukchi Sea. At one point the bear was paddling around just below me off the fantail - a mere 12 feet away. He was more than curious - from what it looked like to me, he was trying to find a way onto the ship! Although it's not unusual for polar bears to swim great distances between ice floes, I have no idea where this bear was headed. The ice edge was hundreds of miles away.
