The Polar Star sends a crack snaking through a large ice floe.
bergy bits
We encountered these small broken bits of ice, known as “bergy bits,” on the edge of the pack ice.

As the ship’s massive hull pushed ice to the side, the floes would tilt, showing just how thick they are.

The color of the ice ranged from this beautiful aquamarine blue to dirty brown.
