A red tide was spotted in the sea off Nan'ao County, in Guangdong Province, around 15:40 hours Wednesday [7 Jun 2000]. Nanhai Branch of the State Oceanic Administration said the red tide first occurred at 10:00 hours Wednesday and extended 4 meters in width around 15:00 hours. The russet belt mainly consists of luminous algae, which produce no toxins, but the outbreak of the red tide is detrimental to the survival of fish and other marine lives [life].
