Red tide update, September 28, 2000
Texas Parks and Wildlife

This is the TPWD's red tide update for September 28th, 2000.

TPWD biologists flew over the middle Texas coast today in search of visible red tide. Red tide was observed in patches in:

* east Corpus Christi Bay near Ingleside
* in the northeastern and southeastern corners of Nueces Bay
* along the west shore of Oso Bay
* at the jetties at Port Aransas
* in Mesquite Bay
* in Ayers Bay
* in East Matagorda Bay

No visible red tide was observed in the nearshore Gulf of Mexico from north Padre Island east to Sargent and Caney Creek.

Some dead fish were observed on Matagorda Island.

There have been no reports of visible red tide, dead fish or respiratory irritation in the Galveston and Freeport areas since last Saturday. Although conditions look relatively good with no large areas with heavy concentrations of red tide reported on the coast, weather conditions of sunny, clear days, remain conducive to growth of red tide.

Three common signs of a red tide bloom are discolored water, dead fish, and breathing difficulty.

To report sightings of red tide during weekdays, call your local TPWD office or the Kills and Spills Team at (512) 912-7055.
