Red tide update, September 27, 2000
Texas Parks and Wildlife

This is the TPW red tide update for September 27, 2000.

A cold front passed through the coastal areas late Sunday evening and early Monday morning. We speculate that the cold front may have dispersed the bloom in a manner which will minimize red tide impacts for one to three days. We are also speculating that there is a good possibility the red tide will reform in the nearshore Gulf and possibly in some bays after that time. TPWD will conduct an overflight for visible red tide on Thursday, September 28.

Red tide is being detected in the pass at Port Aransas at this time and there have been some isolated reports of beachgoers experiencing eye and throat irritation near the jetties. Citizens have not been reporting any red tide irritation or fish kills from the Galveston Bay area so far this week.

Three common signs of a red tide bloom are discolored water, dead fish, and breathing difficulty.

To report sightings of red tide during weekdays, call your local TPWD office or the Kills and Spills Team at (512) 912-7055.
