Red tide update, October 4, 2000
Texas Parks and Wildlife

TPWD biologists have not received any new reports of fresh dead fish appearing since late last week. The only reports of beach goers experiencing respiratory irritation on the beach comes from the Surfside area. Analysis of satellite imagery suggests that concentrations of red tide in the nearshore Gulf were substantially declining. Analysis of water samples from portions of Galveston Bay, the Freeport area, and the Gulf pass at Port Aransas suggest red tide was still present over the weekend but at reduced concentrations.

Three common signs of a red tide bloom are discolored water, dead fish, and breathing difficulty. To report sightings of red tide during weekdays, call your local TPWD office or the Kills and Spills Team at (512) 912-7055. For more information about red tide visit the TPWD web site at www.tpwd.state.tx.us and click on the red tide symbol, or call the TPWD hotline at (800) 792-1112, press "4" for fishing, then press "9" for red tide.
