Approvals

The following are approvals needed before travel.

Federal Agencies

 

National Science Foundation (NSF)

  • Domestic Travel
According to the 2019 NSF PAPPG (The Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide) NSF no longer considers Canada domestic.

18 According to the IRS, US territories and possessions are as follows: Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Midway Island, Wake Island, Palmyra Island, Howland Island, Johnston Island, Baker Island, Kingman Reef, Jarvis Island, and other US islands, cays, and reefs that are not part of any of the 50 States.
  • Foreign Travel

Travel outside the areas specified above is considered foreign travel. When anticipated, the proposer must enter the names of countries and dates of visit on the proposal budget, if known.

 

Office of Naval Research (ONR)

  • Domestic Travel

    Travel to Canada, Hawaii and Alaska is considered domestic and requires only internal approval. ONR excludes all U.S. possessions and territories from domestic travel.

 

Other Funding Sources

    Specific restrictions included in the terms of a given contract, grant or subcontract will take precedence. If in doubt, contact the Grant and Contract Services Office as to specific approval requirements at (508) 289-2461 or (508) 289-2360.
