Cecelia B. Fuglister

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow
the death January 14, 2005, of Cecelia B. Fuglister of Falmouth at
Harborside Healthcare in Falmouth. She was 98.

Cecelia Bowerman
Fuglister was born June 16, 1906 in West Falmouth, a tenth generation
descendent of Falmouth settler Quaker Thomas Bowerman, the builder of
the Bowerman House or Saconesset Homestead in West Falmouth. Her
parents established Bowerman’s Beach Club on Chapoquoit Beach in West
Falmouth.

She attended Falmouth schools and was graduated from
Lawrence High School in 1924. She earned a B.A. degree in mathematics
and biology from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, in 1928,
returning to Falmouth to work at Falmouth Memorial Library. She left in
1932 to earn a master’s degree in library science from Columbia
University, returning a year later to become librarian, a position she
held until 1941. She married WHOI physical oceanographer Frederick C.
“Fritz” Fuglister, who died in 1987, in 1939.

After raising her
children in Woods Hole, Cecelia Fuglister joined the Institution staff
in 1961 to help establish a document library. She served as document
librarian until she retired in 1977. A violinist, she and her husband
hosted chamber music evenings at their home and were involved with the
Cape Cod Symphony and other musical organizations on Cape Cod. She was
a treasurer of the Lawrence High School Scholarship Association and of
the Falmouth Garden Club. A lifelong member of the West Falmouth
Friends Meeting, she was a longtime volunteer and served as treasurer,
retiring in 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick J.
Fuglister of Cleveland, OH, and Charles Kurt Fuglister of Woods Hole,
MA; a daughter, Elizabeth Stewart of San Diego, CA; three
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held April 30, 2005 at
2 p.m. at the West Falmouth Friends Meeting House on Route 28A in West
Falmouth, MA. Memorial donations may be made to the West Falmouth
