In Memoriam: James E. "Reggie" Proctor

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the unexpected death of employee James E. "Reggie" Proctor on February 6, in Toledo, OH.  He was 34.

Reggie was born on January 12, 1982, in Bangor, ME. He graduated from Bangor High School in 2000. He earned a B.S. degree in biology from the University of Maine in 2005, and a B.S. in marine engineering operations from Maine Maritime Academy in 2010.

Reggie began working at WHOI in 2010 and, until his death, was an active employee working on the R/V KNORR as an oiler. His time on the KNORR allowed him to explore Iceland, Greenland, South Africa, and the Azores. Most recently he worked as a marine engineer for Grand River Navigation on the Great Lakes.

Reggie enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Holbrook Pond, and many years skiing at Sugarloaf. He enjoyed skiing since he could stand, and served alongside his grandfather as a member of the Sugarloaf Ski Patrol from 1998-1999. Reggie would read everything he could get his hands on and was especially fond of National Geographic, which he would read cover to cover from a very young age. He enjoyed sharing what he learned and could recall facts on just about any topic. Reggie was a proud, adoring father to his 'very advanced' son Arlo James who will be two years old in March. Some of their favorite things to do together included going for bike rides and playing in Daddy's truck. They both saw something in that old truck that no one else could.

Reggie was the beloved son of Ann M. Marston and Stephen J. Proctor. He is survived by his wife Kate MacLellan Proctor; son Arlo James Proctor; his brother and best friend, Kevin M. Proctor; his special grandmother Elizabeth "Betty" Marston; his uncle, Chuck; aunts, Cindy, Carla, Molly, Pam, Heidi, and Laurie; and many treasured friends. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Charles F. Marston; and his uncle, James Proctor.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, February 15, at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor, ME. The family invites relatives and friends to gather at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., immediately following the service Monday. Condolences and stories may be shared at or on Reggie's Facebook page. A memory book will be created for Arlo.

Those who wish to remember Reggie in a special way may make gifts in his name to the Arlo J. Proctor Education Fund, Bangor Savings Bank, P.O. Box 930, Bangor, ME, 04401.
