John A. Lomba

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow
the death August 26, 2006 of retiree John A. Lomba of New Bedford at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He
was 79.

John Aires Lomba was born November 18, 1926 in Brava, Cape Verde.  After
moving to the United States, he worked as a machine operator for ITT
Wire and Cable in Pawtucket, R.I., from 1960 to 1969, when he joined the
Carpenter’s Local Union No. 1331 in Buzzards Bay. He also worked
briefly in carpentry for Auguste Clough of Falmouth from May to
September 1977.

John joined the WHOI staff as a carpenter in October 1977, working with
Ed Phares.  He was promoted to senior carpenter in 1984 and
retired from the Institution in November 1988.  His quiet demeanor
and warm smile are well remembered.

Survivors include his wife, Rose (Miranda) Lomba of New Bedford,
Mass.; two sons, David Lomba of California and Samuel Lomba of East
Falmouth, Mass.; four daughters, Belmira Nascimento of Wareham, Mass., Marie Baker of Orlando, Fla., and
Olimpia McCall and Madalena Williams of East Falmouth, Mass.; four
stepchildren, David Neves, Rosemary Harrison, Alycia Gonsalves and
Donna Revalee, all of California; a brother, Simon DaLomba of Spring
Hill, Fla.; three sisters, Carlota DePina and Ana Ledo of Spring Hill,
Fla. and Maria DaLomba of Providence, R.I.; twenty-two grandchildren,
twelve great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, August 31, from 4 to 8 p.m. at
the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street in New Bedford. A
funeral service will be held Friday, September 1, at 10 a.m. in the
International Church of the Nazarene, 284 Pleasant Street, New Bedford,
with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
