William White

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree William White on July 15, 2012, in Dunedin, Florida, after an extended illness.  He was 76.

William was born on September 21, 1935 in Boston. He was the son of the late John & Lillian Good White.  He graduated from Cambridge Latin in 1952. He was a native of Massachusetts but had lived primarily in Connecticut and Florida for the past 36 years.

Prior to working at WHOI, William served with the United States Air Force spending over three years in Germany during the Korean conflict.  He began his career at WHOI in 1961 as ordinary seaman aboard the R/V Chain.  In 1962, he was promoted to able-bodied seaman.  In 1967 he was promoted to junior oiler and in 1968 to oiler.  He retired in 1973. He is also a retiree of Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT, and was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church in Ansonia, CT. He was a life member of VFW Post 8818 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and participated in several sports as a young man becoming an avid sports fan.

He was the husband of Lorraine Alu (Judd) White.  He is survived by four sons, William A. White Jr. of Oklahoma, John W. (White) Russell of MA, Edward P. Judd, Jr. of Maine, and David P. Judd of Wolcott, CT; his brother William H. Fitzgibbons of VT; three sisters, Carolyn Scholl & Gayle Bonavita both of Seymour, CT, and Deborah Tarasuik of MA; and four grandchildren, Mitchell White, Christopher, Alexandra & Gregory Judd, and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services and burial were held in July. Remembrances can be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation or the hospice of your choice.
