"Hindcast" model of 2005 red tide

Using measurements taken from New England waters from March to June 2005, WHOI researchers produced this computer-modeled simulation of the historically widespread bloom of the toxic algae Alexandrium fundyense. Red denotes the highest concentration of organisms and blue the lowest. The algae cells germinated from cyst beds in the Bay of Fundy and along the coast of Maine; then they were swept south and west by coastal currents. Two nor?easters in May pushed the bloom into Cape Cod and Massachusetts bays. (Data visualization by Ruoying He and Dennis McGillicuddy, WHOI)
