SUMMARY:WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY (WHPL)
DESCRIPTION:What is justice? Where does tyranny come from\, and why does democracy seem so fragile? Can reason tame politics — or not? These are urgent questions for so many folks today; they are also at the core of Plato’s Republic\, one of the wildest and most radical works of political philosophy ever written. Come to the library to join a discussion of the first book in this text\, led by Justin Reynolds\, PhD\, and Ana Keilson\, PhD\, of the Gull Island Institute\, on Tuesday\, May 5\, from 6-7:30 p.m. This session will serve as a teaser and introduction to the text. Depending on interest\, the group may continue to read and discuss the Republic over the course of the summer. The first book may be read by itself as a free-standing dialogue (which some scholars believe it originally was). Please email whpl_mail@clamsnet.org to request a .pdf of the 30-page reading in an accessible modern translation. The annual Plant Sale at the library is one of the highlights of spring in Woods Hole. The sale has been running since the mid-1970s and has become a vital source of operating funds for the village library. This year the sale will be held rain or shine on Saturday morning\, May 9\, from 9 a.m. to noon on the library lawn\, 581 Woods Hole Road\, spreading to the adjacent Museum lawn at 579 Woods Hole Road. Ample parking for the event will be available down the street in WHOI’s Challenger Lot. Cash or credit cards are accepted as payment. Many of the plants in the sale are donated\, so the sale is one of the best places to find locally successful perennials\, as they are dug from local gardens where they have become too successful and need to be thinned. People donate not only their perennials\, but also shrubs\, ferns\, herbs\, small trees\, and other garden plants to this annual fundraiser. This year\, the sale will feature a lovely selection of stewartias\, freshly dug from a prolific local source. Interesting varieties of tomatoes\, vegetables\, herbs\, and many pollinator-friendly flower seedlings are grown by the Plant Sale Committee and gardeners in the community\, especially for the sale. Shoppers looking for a perfect last-minute Mother’s Day gift may also purchase a beautiful spring bouquet of tulips. If you would like to donate plants\, they can be dropped off in the library courtyard on Thursday and Friday\, May 7 and 8. Pots and soil\, as well as labels\, are available at the library in the courtyard. Perennials\, shrubs\, small trees\, house plants\, and seedlings\, as well as tubers\, corms\, and bulbs\, are all welcome. Please be sure to label donated plants with name and color.  For questions\, please get in touch with the WHPL Plant Sale Committee by emailing whpl.plantsale@gmail.com or calling the library at (508) 548-8961.
