Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Will Lead Partnership to Establish Coastal and Global Observatories for Ocean Observatories Initiative : Image

Pioneer Array

The Pioneer Array will integrate traditional research mooring technology with advanced robotics, communications, and instrumentation to collect environmental data that we've never had access to before. The backbone of the Array will be nine moorings with surface buoys: three electromechanical moorings (EMs) and six profiler moorings. The EMs (shown here with large surface buoys) generate power and provide multiple communications links, while supporting docking stations and underwater nodes for instruments and vehicles. Profiler moorings (shown with smaller surface buoys) will measure properties (salinity, temperature, etc.) of the water column. Robotic underwater vehicles will survey and sample the space between and around the moorings. (Illustration by Jack Cook, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
