Looking for Resilience

WHOI coral scientists Anne Cohen and Pat Lohmann extract core samples from a coral during a recent cruise to Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in the central Pacific Ocean. The scientists will take CT scans of the cores to reveal how coral reefs in the region have been responding to heat waves and warming ocean temperatures, which can lead to coral bleaching. The work is part of a broader effort to locate reefs throughout the world that are adapting to climate change. Cohen is giving a talk today about climate resilient coral reefs at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City. (Photo by Richard Brooks)
