In-the-Field Experience

March 6, 2017

Ithaca College senior Cynthia Becker (left) helps WHOI microbial ecologist Amy Apprill collect a water sample off the southern coast of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Apprill uses genetic techniques to detect what kinds of microorganisms are in the water around coral reefs and assess the role of those microbes in coral health. Becker worked with Apprill this past fall as a Semester at WHOI student. “This was an amazing opportunity for me to experience fieldwork,” said Becker, who hopes to pursue a career in marine biology. “I could learn first-hand about the techniques that go into characterizing seawater microbial communities.” Application is open now for the Fall 2017 Semester.(Photo by Paul Caiger, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
