Where the Wind Blows

Where the Wind Blows

July 26, 2014

The WHOI dock often hosts visiting research vessels from other institutions. In June 1985, Alcyone, research vessel of renowned ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, stopped over in Woods Hole, and the famed ocean explorer met with John Steele, WHOI’s Director at the time, and a few scientists during his brief visit. Alcyone‘s sillhouette is unmistakeable, thanks to two computer-controlled, hollow metal stacks that act as airfoils, propelling the ship when there is wind.
