Under Ice
May 19, 2017The lights of the hybrid remotely operated vehicle Nereid Under Ice (NUI) shine beneath an ice floe during a 2016 cruise to search for life on the Arctic sea floor. NUI was designed to work beneath sea ice and near the calving front of a glacier—places that are difficult to study. The vehicle can operate as an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) following a pre-programmed mission or as a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) connected to the surface by a thin, lightweight optical fiber tether that allows NUI to work in one place on the seafloor while its support ship moves with the ice at the surface.
