The drilling vessel D/V Glomar Challenger , shown here during project FAMOUS (French-American Mid-Ocean Undersea Study) in 1974, was the first drill ship to be used for scientific research by the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Ocean drilling has given scientists a critical look at the structure of the sub-seafloor and the processes that form and change Earth’s crust. Cores of rock and sediment, some miles in length and recording millions of years of Earth’s history, have helped confirm seafloor spreading and plate tectonics and also provided a record of how the planet’s climate has changed over time.
